TogglePlanning to travel to Mexico? Let me share with you guys the cost estimation from my recent trip to Cancun.
Mexico is growing in popularity as a vacation destination for people of all ages and origins. Travel publications usually list Cancun as the tourist destination of choice because of its many man-made and natural attractions. It is located directly along the Caribbean Sea coast on the Yucatan Peninsula. Also, Cancun boasts exciting nightlife, Mexican culture, and white-sand beaches.
But How Much Is a Trip to Cancun Mexico?
Here are some of my real-life cost estimations for a trip to Cancun, Mexico which can help you create travel plans.
Airfare/Flight
The beginning of your trip is at the biggest hub in North America, Cancun International Airport.
The cost of your flight to Cancun will depend on when you leave and where you go. Nonetheless, round-trip tickets typically cost between $150 – $600. Direct flights between the United Kingdom and the European Union usually start at $600.
If you want to cut costs, consider making your reservations in late April or early December, which is when Cancun is the least expensive. Although there are storm warnings, this isn’t the best time to go weather-wise, but you could still save hundreds of hard-earned money.
Transportations
The ADO bus, which costs about $4, can take you from the Cancun airport to downtown Cancun. Taxis are another option, although they will cost you about $30 for each trip.
Once you’re within the city, tickets for Cancun’s transport system, which includes buses and colectivos (shared vans), range from $0.50 – $1.50 for each trip.
If you decide to rent a car, a small car should cost you between $25 – $50 per day. Renting a car gives you the flexibility to see the parks, neighbourhoods, and museums of Cancun at your own pace. Discover Cars offers car rentals in Cancun.
Accommodations
There is a wide range of places to stay in Cancun, from luxurious resorts to affordable hotels.
There are several high-end options in the Hotel Zone, with nightly rates starting at about $150. If you want something more reasonably priced, you might want to look at accommodation in or close to Cancun’s city centre, where hotel rooms start at about $30 per night. Another choice is to rent a vacation house from an Airbnb or VRBO property, which can cost anything from $40 – $300 each night.
Booking the accommodation and airfare together as a package can save you money, which is ideal if you’re only on vacation.
Activities/Attractions
Many of Cancun’s beaches, such as Playa Delfines, a public beach with breathtaking views of the Caribbean, are free to use. A $10 to $30 entrance fee is usually necessary for entry to attractions like the Interactive Aquarium and the Mayan Museum in Cancun.
History lovers – like me – would enjoy learning about Cancun’s Mexican history at nearby attractions like the well-known Chichen Itza or Tulum. Depending on the tour operator and amenities, the cost of a guided day trip to these destinations can range from $40 to $150.
Trips
It wouldn’t be a trip to Cancun without exploring the neighbourhood. A well-liked day trip location, Isla Mujeres is a little island off the coast with pristine beaches, a bustling town, and breathtaking views.
A round-trip ferry ticket to Isla Mujeres costs around $17. From there, you may rent a golf cart for around $45 per day or a bike for around $10 per day.
Near Tulum, there is an underwater cave system called Cenote Dos Ojos which is a mesmerizing sight to witness. The cenote entrance fee is between $10 – $20, and snorkelling and diving activities can be arranged for an extra fee.
Foods
For those who enjoy good food, Cancun is a culinary haven, offering everything from worldwide to authentic Mexican cuisine. A mid-range restaurant would often set you back $10 – $20 per meal, but street food and smaller restaurants, or “fondas,” can offer you inexpensive cuisine for $3 – $5 per dish.
Do not miss tasting the regional specialties, such as panuchos, sopa de lima, and cochinita pibil.
Nightlife
Cancun is known for its amazing nightlife, and the Hotel Zone is home to plenty of clubs, bars, and entertainment venues. Popular nightclubs have entrance fees ranging from $30 to $70, which often come with an open bar.
For a more relaxing evening, head to downtown Cancun, where you can discover live music venues and a variety of pubs with lower-cost drinks – beers and cocktails start at about $3.
Travel Insurance
It’s essential to prepare for travel insurance even if it’s not part of your Cancun trip costs. Travel insurance provides a safety net for unexpected occurrences and accidents, such as medical costs, trip cancellations, and misplaced luggage.
Travel insurance might cost between $40 – $200, depending on your coverage needs and the length of your trip.
Cancun Trip Money-Saving Tips
It’s not necessary to spend a fortune to visit Cancun. Here are some tips for a money-saving trip to Cancun:

- To save money on individual ticket fees, book your day trips and excursions in advance or as part of a package deal.
